As vote counting got underway on Monday, May 4, Thalapathy Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam — TVK — surged ahead in the early trends, leading in over 108 of the state’s 234 assembly seats. A party that is barely two years old was outpacing the DMK and AIADMK, both of which have dominated Tamil Nadu politics for nearly half a century.
