India marked its 77th Republic Day with a grand ceremonial parade at Kartavya Path in the national capital on Sunday, highlighting the country’s military strength, cultural diversity and democratic values. President Droupadi Murmu took the salute at the main ceremony, attended by top political and military leadership.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and the chiefs of the Army, Navy and Air Force were present. Before the parade, the Prime Minister paid tribute to fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial, setting a solemn and respectful tone for the day’s celebrations.
‘Vande Mataram at 150’ theme highlights India’s journey
The theme for Republic Day 2026, “150 Years of Vande Mataram”, formed the emotional and visual core of the celebrations. The historic national song written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was woven into the parade’s design, tableaux and cultural performances.
From the freedom struggle to modern nation-building, the theme reflected how Vande Mataram has inspired generations and continues to symbolize India’s unity, resilience and national consciousness.
Military tableau honours veterans and nation-building
One of the key attractions of the parade was the defence tableau titled “From Struggle to Nation Building”, dedicated to India’s veterans and their contribution to national security.
The tableau featured 3D models of iconic military hardware, including T-55 and Vijayanta tanks, MiG-21, Mirage and Jaguar fighter aircraft, and naval warships INS Mysore and INS Rajput, alongside the Amar Jawan Jyoti. The display highlighted India’s defence legacy and growing self-reliance in military capabilities.
30 tableaux reflect India’s cultural diversity
According to the Ministry of Defence, a total of 30 tableaux participated in this year’s parade. These included representations from 17 states and Union Territories and 13 central ministries and departments.
The tableaux were based on the themes “Mantra of Freedom: Vande Mataram” and “Mantra of Prosperity: Aatmanirbhar Bharat”, showcasing regional traditions, folk art, developmental initiatives and cultural heritage, reinforcing the message of unity in diversity.
Strong international presence signals diplomatic significance
The Republic Day parade also carried diplomatic importance, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa attending as chief guests.
Officials indicated that their presence reflects the strengthening India-European Union partnership, with discussions on trade, strategic cooperation and global challenges expected to follow the celebrations.
10,000 special guests attend celebrations
Around 10,000 special guests were invited to this year’s Republic Day, including scientists, farmers, athletes, women entrepreneurs, startup founders, artisans, members of self-help groups, persons with disabilities and beneficiaries of government schemes.
Following the parade, special visits were arranged for them to the National War Memorial, Prime Ministers’ Museum, and other key landmarks in Delhi to connect them more closely with India’s national heritage.
Tight security and traffic arrangements in Delhi
Given the scale of the event, elaborate security arrangements were put in place across central Delhi. The Delhi Traffic Police imposed restrictions and diversions on several routes to ensure smooth movement and safety throughout the celebrations.
Heavy deployment of security personnel was visible around Kartavya Path from early morning.
Buddhist leaders echo message of peace
Speaking on the occasion, Venerable Shartse Khensur Rinpoche Jangchup Choeden, Secretary General of the International Buddhist Confederation, said that India showcases its strength on Republic Day while also spreading the message of peace, compassion and harmony inspired by Buddhism.
The 77th Republic Day celebrations stood as a powerful reminder of India’s democratic foundations, cultural richness and global outlook. With the theme “150 Years of Vande Mataram”, the event bridged history and modernity, reaffirming India’s commitment to unity, inclusiveness and international cooperation — values that continue to define the nation’s path forward.
