A High-Speed Leap for India on Independence Day
India is set to script a historic chapter in its transport journey. The country’s first bullet train will begin operations on August 15, 2027, marking a major milestone in modern rail infrastructure. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor will be commissioned in phases to ensure safety, reliability, and smooth operations.
The project is expected to dramatically cut travel time and place India among a select group of nations with operational high-speed rail networks.
Phased Rollout Planned for Safe Operations
According to the Railway Minister, the bullet train service will not open across the entire corridor at once. Instead, operations will begin in carefully planned stages. The first operational stretch will be between Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat.
Subsequent phases will include Vapi–Surat, followed by Vapi–Ahmedabad, then Thane–Ahmedabad, and finally the full Mumbai–Ahmedabad route.
“The bullet train will be ready by August 15, 2027. The Surat–Bilimora section will open first, followed by other stretches in phases,” the minister said.
The phased rollout is aimed at testing systems such as signaling, safety protocols, and real-time operations under live conditions before the full corridor becomes operational.
Cities to Be Connected by the Bullet Train
Once fully functional, the bullet train will connect key commercial and industrial hubs across Gujarat and Maharashtra. These include Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Vapi, Thane, and Mumbai.
The high-speed rail line will run from Sabarmati in Ahmedabad to Mumbai, covering a total distance of approximately 508 kilometers. It will be India’s first dedicated high-speed rail corridor, offering fast, reliable, and seamless connectivity between two major economic regions in western India.
Speed, Travel Time, and Station Stops
The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor has been designed for trains capable of running at a maximum speed of 320 kmph. After the entire corridor opens, the bullet train will complete the journey in 2 hours and 17 minutes, a significant reduction compared to conventional rail services.
Travel time will vary depending on the number of stops.
With stops at only four stations, the journey from Mumbai to Ahmedabad will take just 1 hour and 58 minutes.
If the train halts at all 12 stations, the total travel time will be 2 hours and 17 minutes.
This time savings is expected to benefit business travelers, industries, and daily commuters alike.
Inaugural Run to Cover a Longer Distance
The Railway Ministry has also revised plans for the inaugural run of the bullet train. Initially, the first run was planned on a 50-kilometre stretch between Surat and Bilimora. This has now been expanded.
The inaugural service in August 2027 will cover a 100-kilometre section between Surat and Vapi, showcasing the project’s readiness and operational capability over a longer distance.
Officials believe this extended inaugural stretch will better demonstrate the technology, speed, and efficiency of India’s first bullet train.
Why the Project Faced Delays
The foundation stone for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project was laid in 2017, with an initial target for completion by December 2023. However, the timeline had to be revised due to delays in land acquisition, legal procedures, and execution challenges on the ground.
According to the Rail Ministry, a total of ₹85,801 crore has already been spent on the project. The corridor is being developed with technical and financial support from the Japanese government, using the globally proven Shinkansen technology.
Construction Progress So Far
Official data shows steady progress on the ground. So far:
412 km of foundation work has been completed
405 km of piers have been constructed
344 km of girders have been cast
330 km of girders have already been launched
The Rail Ministry says all agencies are working in close coordination to meet the 2027 deadline.
What Changes After 2027?
India’s first bullet train is more than just a transport project. It represents a leap in engineering, infrastructure capability, and economic vision. Once operational, it will reduce travel time, lower carbon emissions, and boost trade and business activity along the Mumbai–Ahmedabad corridor.
