Isha Ambani dazzled at the Met Gala pre-party in a Manish Malhotra gown crafted in 450 hours, representing 26 regions of India’s rich craft heritage.

26 Regions of India in One Dress — Isha Ambani’s Met Gala Pre-Party Look Becomes the Talk of the Town
When Isha Ambani walked into the Vogue Met Gala Pre-Party in New York on May 1st, every eye in the room turned toward her. But the attention was not just on her — it was on what she was wearing. Because that dress was not simply an outfit. It was a journey through the art and craft of an entire nation.
Isha Ambani, Non-Executive Director at Reliance and founder of her fashion label ‘Swadesh,’ did not arrive merely as a guest this time. She arrived with a statement.

450 Hours of Work, an Entire Country in One Outfit
This custom handcrafted bandage dress was designed by Manish Malhotra in collaboration with the artisans of Isha’s label ‘Swadesh.’ It took over 450 hours to create.
The dress features 26 distinct borders — and each one represents the traditional art form of a different state or region of India. North, south, east, west — the entire country was woven into a single garment.

The Craft Traditions Woven Into This Dress
The list of techniques used in this outfit speaks for itself — and it is a long one.
Zari from Uttar Pradesh, Parsi Gara embroidery, Maheshwari weaving, Karchobi, Aari Bharat, Tilla, Kantha, Kanjivaram silk, Paithani, and Banarasi brocade — all of these found their place on one dress, side by side.
Each border carries its own history and its own identity. Together, they formed a tapestry that was equal parts tradition, craft, and contemporary vision.
Celebrity stylist Anaita Shroff styled Isha for this look. The strapless silhouette and the seamless fusion of the traditional with the modern made the outfit a perfect fit for this year’s Met Gala theme — Costume as Art.

Manish Malhotra and Swadesh — A Shared Vision
Manish Malhotra needs no introduction in Indian fashion. But this time, he did not just design a dress — he stitched a message into it.
Isha Ambani’s label ‘Swadesh’ works to bring Indian handloom and traditional craftsmanship into the mainstream. Through this outfit, she carried the work of India’s largely unsung artisans — weavers and embroiderers working in villages and small towns — to one of the world’s most watched fashion stages.
Fashion experts believe that moments like these do something important for Indian handicrafts on the global stage. When the world’s cameras linger on a dress like this, they are in effect looking at the hands of craftspeople whose names most people will never know. That kind of visibility matters.

One Dress, One Country, One Powerful Statement
Isha Ambani’s outfit was not just fashion — it was cultural diplomacy. On the eve of the world’s most glamorous fashion event, India’s centuries-old craft tradition was presented to a global audience in a way that was impossible to ignore.
450 hours of labour, the artistry of 26 regions, and one dress — this was not coincidence. It was intention. And that intention is precisely what gives Indian fashion a distinct and lasting identity on the global stage.
