India’s regional film landscape, particularly cinema from the Northeast, has received a significant boost. The Manipuri-language feature film Boong has been nominated at the EE BAFTA Film Awards 2026 in the Children and Family Film category. The nomination was officially announced by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in London. In recent years, this stands out as one of the most prominent international recognitions for a Manipuri feature film.

Boong is supported by actor-producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, known for championing content-driven and unconventional cinema. Industry observers note that their backing helped bring a rooted Manipuri story to a global platform, enabling wider international visibility for a film made outside mainstream Hindi cinema.
Competing with Global Studio Films
At BAFTA 2026, Boong faces competition from major international titles in the same category, including Disney’s popular franchises Lilo & Stitch and Zootopia 2, along with the animated science-fantasy film Arco. Against such high-profile studio productions, the presence of a modestly budgeted regional-language film is being seen as a notable achievement in itself.
A Story Told Through Innocent Eyes
Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, Boong follows the journey of a young boy named Boong, played by Gugun Kipgen, who lives in the valley region of Manipur. Hoping to surprise his mother with a meaningful gift, the child sets out with the deeper wish of bringing his estranged father back home. The film explores themes of family, separation and hope through a tender, child-centric narrative.
From International Festivals to Indian Theatres
The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2024, where it received encouraging responses from audiences and critics alike. Subsequently, Boong was released in select Indian cinemas, including PVR INOX screens, on September 19, 2025. Due to its limited theatrical run, the film reached a niche audience within the country.
OTT Release Still Awaited
There is growing interest among viewers regarding the film’s digital release. However, Boong is yet to premiere on any OTT platform such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. The makers have not made any official announcement regarding its streaming release so far.

The BAFTA Film Awards 2026 will be held on February 22 at London’s Royal Festival Hall, with Alan Cumming set to host the ceremony. Whether Boong takes home the award or not, its nomination underscores a growing global interest in Indian regional stories.
